What We Do
EspressoSnob is a research site. We compare espresso equipment by analyzing manufacturer specs, cross-referencing verified owner reviews, and reading what actual home baristas say on Reddit, HomeBarista forums, and other communities where real people share real experiences.
We don't get paid by manufacturers. We don't accept review units. Our recommendations come from data -- not relationships with brands.
The result: when we say a grinder is worth your money, it's because the specs hold up, the community backs it, and the value math makes sense. When we say something isn't worth it, we tell you why with specifics.
How We Research
What We Analyze
- Manufacturer Specs: Boiler type and volume, pump pressure, PID controls, portafilter size, burr type and size, grind adjustment range, build materials, warranty coverage.
- Verified Owner Reviews: We read hundreds of reviews per product across Amazon, specialty retailers, and direct purchase platforms. We look for patterns -- recurring praise and recurring complaints tell you more than any single review.
- Community Consensus: r/espresso, r/Coffee, HomeBarista.com, and other forums where home baristas compare notes. If the community says a product has a known issue, we report it. If there's a consensus favorite in a price range, we want to know why.
- Price Tracking: We verify current retail prices and flag when products frequently go on sale or when the street price differs significantly from MSRP.
- Comparison Context: Every product is evaluated against alternatives in its price range. A $300 machine isn't compared to a $1,500 machine -- it's compared to what else you could buy for $300.
What We Don't Do
We're transparent about this: we are a research site, not a testing lab. We don't pull shots on every machine we cover. What we do is synthesize the collective experience of thousands of real owners and combine that with verified technical specifications to give you an informed recommendation.
We believe this approach is actually more useful than a single reviewer's opinion. One person's experience with one machine in one kitchen with one water supply is a data point. Hundreds of verified owner experiences across different conditions is a dataset. We work with datasets.
Affiliate Disclosure
EspressoSnob is reader-supported. When you click a link to Amazon or other retailers and make a purchase, we may earn a small commission at no extra cost to you.
This commission does not influence our recommendations. We recommend the same equipment whether or not an affiliate link is available. Our editorial process and our revenue are separate.
If you'd prefer to buy directly without using our links, we completely understand. The equipment is the same either way. We appreciate the support, but we'd rather you trust our recommendations than feel obligated to click our links.
Why EspressoSnob Exists
Most gear review sites fall into two camps: manufacturer-funded content that ranks well because of ad budgets, or hobby blogs that are passionate but inconsistent in methodology.
We wanted something in between. A resource that treats espresso equipment evaluation seriously -- with structured comparisons, verified data, and honest conclusions -- but without the overhead (or bias) of a manufacturer relationship.
You're spending real money on your espresso setup. You deserve research you can trust to help you spend it well.
